Deputy Secretary General - Global Affairs The mission of the
Department of Foreign Affairs is to serve the Irish people, promote
their values and advance their prosperity and interests abroad, and to
provide the Government with the capabilities, analysis and influence
to ensure that Ireland derives the maximum benefit from all areas of
its external engagement. The Department ensures the promotion and
protection of Ireland?s interests in the world, contributing to
international priorities such as peace, security and the eradication
of poverty and hunger.

Deputy Secretary General, Global Affairs, will report directly to the
Secretary General and will be responsible for coordination across a
suite of Global Affairs, policies and related Divisions, as well as
broader management responsibilities. The role will provide strategic
leadership and guidance across the Department as well as oversight and
management of Global Affairs, the Mission Network and governance
structures across the Department.
Global Affairs:
The role will involve the oversight and management of the
Department?s work in support of issues such as economic recovery,
global health, sustainable development, climate action, international
security, conflict prevention, peacebuilding and human rights. This
work is undertaken bilaterally, through Ireland?s European Union
membership and through membership of multilateral institutions,
particularly the United Nations. Much of this work is managed across
five divisions and directorates at HQ:
Asia Pacific Directorate;
Development Cooperation and Africa Division;
Economic Directorate;
Global Irish Division; and Political Division. Mission Network:
The Deputy Secretary has responsibility for the oversight and
coordination of priorities and delivery across Ireland?s diplomatic
network in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. This network
currently comprises thirty-two embassies and consulates. The
successful candidate will:
? demonstrate a record of accomplishment as a leader and senior
manager in a changing international environment;
? embody the values of integrity and leadership, and a commitment to
diversity, public service and excellence;
? have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a proven
track record in managing relationships at a senior level;
? have an understanding, or the ability to quickly acquire and
understanding of the Department?s responsibilities at national and
international level;
? demonstrate an understanding of negotiation and institutional
processes in both the EU and UN contexts and an understanding of the
domestic public policy context in which the Department operates;
? have a good working knowledge of a second language and a
commitment to further developing language skills. The position is
based in Dublin though attendance across the Department?s offices
and global mission network will be required from time to time. This is
